November 18, 2008 – Flower arranging with Betty Call

Betty Call will lead the group in making their own arrangement that will be perfect for the Thanksgiving table, and adaptable throughout the holiday season.  Each participant is asked to bring his or her own waterproof container and greens from home.  (Greens should be cut and placed in water in the morning for best results.)  Pre-registration is required.  There is a fee of $10 for Garden Club members and $20 for guests.

Betty operates her own floral design studio, "The Floral Touch" in Stow. She taught for over 12 years a Floral Shop course at Minuteman and other adult courses for many years.   She has acted as Chairman several times for the flower show at Tower Hill Botanic Garden and on State show committee. Betty is an LIFE National Council Flower Show Judge and has won several flower show awards such as the Marie Parks Creativity Award at the New England Flower Show and the Topsfield Fair Interpretation Award and Theme awards. March 10, 2009 - Greening Up Your Yard Naturally: Get Your Lawn Off Drugs!
Massachusetts Audubon Society will show us how to have a beautiful yard without using chemicals that may harm children, pets, and the environment. Topics covered include soils, nontoxic pest controls, insect control, and turf grass establishment and maintenance. Using these methods, you can protect the health of your family and the water resources in your watershed.

April 14, 2009 – Rain Gardens: Beautiful Water-Saving, Wildlife-Friendly Gardens
by Dori Smith, M.Ed., Gardens for Life, Acton

Would you like to help protect our precious water resources, while at the same time creating lush, beautiful gardens that attract birds and butterflies? Rain gardens take advantage of our natural abundance of rainfall rather than wasting it as runoff – using water flowing from your roof, driveway, or lawn. These gardens are easy care, and can often solve problems such as erosion, icy walkways, or wet basements. Dori will review design options, construction details, and appropriate native plants. You are welcome to bring photos or descriptions of your own landscape to use as case studies.

Ms. Smith is dedicated to the “whole earth”; in providing environmentally sensitive landscape design that reconnects humans with nature. She has been trained in design and horticulture at Tower Hill Botanical Garden and New England Wildflower Society (NEWFS), and is a member of the NEWFS Educational Committee. She has been accredited as an Organic Land Care Professional by Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) since 2002, and is Vice Director of The Underground professional network. She has installed 15 or so rain gardens (and designed more) in her practice as an ecological landscape designer in Boston’s western suburbs.
